The chair sports old, possibly original, black paint, four slats, attractive turnings on the front and rear posts, excellent early finials, and an old, probably original, rush seat. Folk art portrait of an elderly woman, oil on a wooden panel, illegible signature on back. The woman sits on a paint decorated Federal chair, holding an open book in her hand. Behind her is red drapery and a window that looks out on a river with a sailboat and with a forest and mountains in the far background. The portrait is in very good condition. The panel is flat and the painting itself is marred only by a scratch on the woman’s lower arm and on the book cover. The portrait is unframed but there are indications that it was framed at one time. Circa 1820-30, American School.

Painted dower chest. The chest features three decorated tombstone panels, two with pinwheel decorations flanking the middle panel inscribed “Abraham Bauman/1814”. The chest sports exceptional original hand-forged strap hinges and the original grab lock. It is in good condition, with stains on the lid, a patch to the lid at the lock, patches to the back and the bottom, and a small mouse hole on the lid of the till. The feet have been replaced. Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania Dutch two-part cupboard, figured walnut and tiger maple. The top section features a strong cornice above two glass doors, each with six panes of old wavy glass. (One pane has been replaced.) The doors open onto shelves with plate rails and spoon slots for enhanced display. The bottom section sports three small drawers with tiger maple fronts over two paneled doors sitting on turned feet. The cupboard is in very good condition, marred only by a small shrinkage separation between the boards on the proper left side and a small putty filled knot on the proper right side. Early 19th century, PA.
