Set of 6 Paint Decorated Chairs

Set of six paint decorated chairs. The chairs sport a tablet top and shaped plank seats and retain their original paint decoration of fruit and acorn stenciling on a pea green background. One chair is stamped “J. SWINT/CHAIR MAKER” on the underside of the seat. (John Swint was a Lancaster County, PA cabinetmaker, active from 1845-1850.) The chairs are in good to very good condition, with a repaired leg on one chair and the expected degree of wear and tear from age and usage. Mid-19th century, Pennsylvania.

Needlework Sampler - Margaret Patterson

Margaret Patterson’s needlework sampler. The sampler is worked in multi-color silk threads on a linen ground. The top register consists of flower and leaf motifs above five alphameric rows above a row of various crowns and initials of family members. Below that are facing birds and trees above the maker’s name and date, “Margaret Patterson/Aged 8, 1810”. The bottom register has trees, a stylized flower and the initials, “ML” and “HL”, all within a Greek key border. The sampler is framed under glass in a birdseye maple frame. It is in good condition, with a few small holes and some staining. English.

Folk Art Painting - "Winter at the Farm"

Folk art painting, “Winter on the Farm”, o/c, unsigned. The painting includes a farm house with a gambrel roof, a barn, a horse-drawn sleigh and various farm animals. It is in very good condition. 

The painting is after F.F. Palmer, (1812-1876), an English artist who became successful in the United States as a lithographer for Currier and Ives. Between 1849–1868, she is credited with producing around two hundred lithographs.
