Painting of Washington’s headquarters, o/c, unsigned. The painting is a beautiful rendition of a hard-to-find subject, showing Washington’s headquarters in Newburgh,NY on the banks of the Hudson River. A brass plaque attached to the frame reads, “Washington’s Headquarters/Newburgh, NY 1782-83”. The painting is in very good condition, with craquelure and a small old repair to the grass in the lower center. No other restorations are visible under black light. 19th century, Hudson River School.

Hudson Valley Kas

Hudson Valley kas, gumwood and poplar. The kas sports an exaggerated stepped cornice, paneled doors and stiles, a shelved interior with a drawer, and a base with a drawer flanked by diamond molding and supported by large bun feet. The kas is dovetailed and constructed with early rose-headed nails. The cornice was cut at some point, probably to facilitate moving the kas out of a room. The kas is in very good condition, structurally sound, and displaying the expected wear and tear from age and usage. 18th century, Hudson Valley or possible New Jersey.

Pilgrim Century Joined Chest

Pilgrim century joined chest, oak with pine panels. The chest sports three large panels on the front and one panel on each end, decorated with edge molding. The back has three panels as well. The lid is attached with what appear to be original snipe hinges. The chest is in very good condition, having a very nice diminutive size, with attractive color and patina. Circa 1720, American.

Sponge Decorated Blanket Chest

Sponge decorated blanket chest, pine. The chest is beautifully decorated on three sides and the lid in ordered sponge decoration. It sports a lid with cast hinges over two drawers with oval brasses and is supported on French feet. The brasses have been replaced and the hinges have been reset. The paint is in excellent condition as is the rest of the chest. Circa 1830-1840, probably Pennsylvania.

Portrait of Anna Hawley - Bartholomew

Portrait of Anna Hawley, o/c, attributed to Edward Sheffield Bartholomew, (1822-1858), based on Anna's diary. The painting shows Anna in profile, an unusual pose, wearing a white dress, holding a sprig of wildflowers, and gazing out on a bucolic landscape. The painting is housed in a beautiful gold leaf frame with ornamental details in the corners. Copies of Anna’s diary attached to the back identify her as the sitter at two years old and the artist as being Edward Sheffield Bartholomew.. The painting is in very good condition, relined, with craquelure and some in-painting. Circa 1840-1850, probably Connecticut.

Edward Sheffield Bartholomew first attempted portrait painting as a vocation, found he was color blind, and subsequently became a noted sculptor. Fifteen of his sculptures and reliefs are owned by the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT and one relief is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
