Portrait of Anna Hawley, o/c, attributed to Edward Sheffield Bartholomew, (1822-1858), based on Anna's diary. The painting shows Anna in profile, an unusual pose, wearing a white dress, holding a sprig of wildflowers, and gazing out on a bucolic landscape. The painting is housed in a beautiful gold leaf frame with ornamental details in the corners. Copies of Anna’s diary attached to the back identify her as the sitter at two years old and the artist as being Edward Sheffield Bartholomew.. The painting is in very good condition, relined, with craquelure and some in-painting. Circa 1840-1850, probably Connecticut.
Edward Sheffield Bartholomew first attempted portrait painting as a vocation, found he was color blind, and subsequently became a noted sculptor. Fifteen of his sculptures and reliefs are owned by the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT and one relief is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
