Folk art portrait of an elderly woman, oil on a wooden panel, illegible signature on back. The woman sits on a paint decorated Federal chair, holding an open book in her hand. Behind her is red drapery and a window that looks out on a river with a sailboat and with a forest and mountains in the far background. The portrait is in very good condition. The panel is flat and the painting itself is marred only by a scratch on the woman’s lower arm and on the book cover. The portrait is unframed but there are indications that it was framed at one time. Circa 1820-30, American School.
