Portraits of a sea captain and his wife, o/c, painted by Isaac Sheffield, (1807-1845). Consigned to auction by a direct descendant, the captain has been identified as Captain Thomas Snyder, (c 1818 – c 1900). The captain is holding a telescope upon which is written, “Age 24”. His ship at sea is shown through a window behind him. Captain Snyder's wife is holding a copy of “Godey’s Lady’s Book”, showing that she was an educated woman who was literate. “Age 24” is also written on her portrait. The portraits were likely done around the time of the couple's marriage. The attractive mahogany ogee frames are old but not original. The portraits are in excellent condition, having been professionally conserved. Circa 1840, Connecticut.
