Shaker four-drawer chest of drawers, pine. The chest boasts a beautifully dovetailed case, attractive bracket feet and a nice old finish. Inscribed in pencil on the back of the top drawer is, “Bought by Mrs. McDermott, Summer 1929. Originally owned by the East Family of Shakers, West Pittsfield, Mass.”
The Shaker village in West Pittsfield was established around 1790, and was the third Shaker village established in America. It was part of the larger Hancock Shaker community, founded in 1783. This chest dates from circa 1830.
