Portrait of Mary Hoyt, oil on canvas, painted by Ammi Phillips, (1788-1865), circa 1840, possibly in Newburgh, NY. The painting is in very good condition, having been professionally cleaned and conserved. It has been relined with only minor inpainting.
Mary Hoyt was the wife of Captain Jeremiah J. Austin, (1819-1879), who owned a shipping company that claimed to have "the fastest ships from Albany to New York". Tragically, Mary died in 1843 at the tender age of 23. She is buried in Albany, NY. Jeremiah's portrait is on display at the Albany Institute of Art.
