Folk Art Trade Sign

Exceptional trade sign, “Jas. A. Caldwell, Groceries and Provisions”, with a fabulous painting of a cow’s head.

The sign also lists a variety of meats sold, with a black field for prices to be written in chalk. The sign is painted on two hand-planed wooden boards, with two battens on the back attached with square nails and early screws.

The sign-maker’s name, (“Rimmey”), and a Boston address are painted at the bottom of the sign. There has been minor restoration to the “195’s” at the top of the sign. The sign dates from the last quarter of the 19th Century.
