Folk Art Sea Chest

Canted sea chest with a folk art painting of a sailing ship on the underside of the lid.

The chest sports hand-forged iron hinges and hardware. The painting is done in crisp white and blue paint. The chest dates from the 18th century but the ship was painted in the mid-19th century.

Painted below the ship is the word “Lyna”. The Lyna was a Norwegian ship built in 1849. It transported Norwegian immigrants to the U.S. in 1849-1850, and then Irish immigrants to the U.S. in 1851.
