An outstanding folk art barber pole.
The turned wooden pole is painted with red and white stripes, and is enhanced by attractive ring turnings at the top and bottom. The pole is supported by a large stepped base on wheels. The base is a creamy white color with black spatter. Above the steps is a rectangular column in the same colors, with black panels framed by gold molding on all four sides. At the top of the pole is a large wooden ball, on which is painted a white crescent moon and stars on a black background.
The pole is in good condition structurally, except for a large vertical shrinkage crack on one side. The paint wear is as expected from age and usage. Late 19th century.
