Folk art civil war Union soldier whirligig, polychrome painted wood and paddles.
The soldier’s face is particularly appealing. The paint on the whirligig is worn and retouched in many places, suggesting that this whirligig has spent time outdoors during its lifetime. One paddle appears to be a replacement. The base is a newer addition.
Despite these condition issues, this whirligig remains an appealing and hard-to-find example of a civil war soldier whirligig, and a fabulous addition to any folk art collection. Circa 1865-1880.
