John Gould, (1804-1881), was a noted English ornithologist and bird artist who traveled to many remote areas of the world to obtain bird specimens for the hand-painted lithographs that he was famous for. His identification of the birds now nicknamed "Darwin's Finches" played a role in the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution and is referenced in Darwin's "Origin of the Species". His lithographic plates were made with the assistance of his wife and several others, including William Hart.
